Christian Education in the African American Church: A Guide for Teaching Truth

book
by Lora-Ellen McKinney. Judson Press, 2003.

Author, deacon, and PhD. Lora-Ellen McKinney believes that Christian Education (CE) is critically important for congregational vitality. Her book offers a comprehensive examination of CE and provides an educational strategy for those congregations who provide education with or for African-Americans. McKinney includes educational theory and offers practical suggestions for creating a strong CE ministry. She discusses learning styles, developmental stages in learners, curriculum, and makes suggestions for incorporating an educational component into different congregational activities. Some may be most interested in McKinney’s review of her research results with several predominantly African American congregations. Others will find her African-Centered educational plan compelling. Still others will appreciate the additional resources, suggestions, “teachable moments[s],” and reflection questions sprinkled throughout the book. McKinney focuses on the African American community, yet her text is rich with ideas and information and can be helpful for any congregation that seeks to strengthen its educational ministry.
