Congregations across the United States increasingly struggle to maintain physical houses of worship as membership declines and buildings age. One preservationist deems it a “national crisis.” In this 10 minute video segment, Religion & Ethics Newsweekly correspondent Saul Gonzalez surveys the changing landscape of sacred buildings in Philadelphia. Interviews from pastors, a historic preservationist, community members, and a real estate developer discuss the future of these dilapidated buildings. Philadelphia-based nonprofit Partners for Sacred Places is highlighted as a national resource for congregations. Viewers will better understand the growing issue and innovative options to utilize declining sacred spaces, such as renting to a dance troupe or selling to a commercial venture. This video is informational rather than instructional.
