article
by Ken Garfield. Faith & Leadership, June 17, 2014. Accessed April 14, 2017.

Faith & Leadership is a leadership education arm of Duke Divinity School. This article highlights the ministry of Charlotte/One, an ecumenically based ministry in Charlotte, North Carolina, and led by Ken Garfield, the author. Charlotte/One is described as “a ministry in North Carolina’s largest city that brings together 20 and 30 year olds with the intention of losing them - to local churches.” Fifty-two congregations in the greater Charlotte area partner to sponsor the Charlotte/One ministry. The ministry meets on weeknights in a chosen setting to intentionally create a community of young believers who share their hopes and fears and build meaningful relationships to deepen their faith. On weekends, they disperse to share their lives with congregations of their choice. Garfield states that challenges facing Charlotte/One are getting the right mix of music to appeal to young adults, knowing when to change venues to create additional interest, and opportunity and finances. Also included in the article is a description of the struggle of mainstream congregations to attract young adults, as shared by Karen-Marie Yust of Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, VA.
