Liturgy for the Closing of a Church

article
The United Church of Canada, 2010. Accessed April 14, 2017.

This downloadable liturgy from the United Church of Canada is designed to be the final community worship service in a closing church. One of its most helpful aspects is the up-front note at the beginning that addresses what may be a complex emotional climate in the closing church, potentially still torn by conflict over decision-making. The liturgy is designed to be adaptable to the circumstances surrounding the closure and able to address the grief, anger, or other emotions in the community. A Litany of Thanksgiving has parts for various lay leaders such as choir members and Sunday school teachers to lead, and a memory-sharing portion that may function somewhat as a eulogy for the church, potentially a very healing moment. Scripture and hymn suggestions are provided, and the service concludes with a commissioning and blessing of the members to go forth into ministry in new places.
