Navigating Pastoral Transitions: A Staff Guide

book
by Barbara Kerkhoff. Liturgical Press, 2013.

As one of three interrelated Roman Catholic resources on “navigating pastoral transitions,” author and educator Barbara Kerkhoff offers assistance to parish staff for the entire process, whether the goodbye, the in-between time, or the hello. Kerkhoff notes that during pastoral transitions, staff responsibilities increase and new opportunities for personal and professional growth-increased self-awareness or a renewed focus on ministry goals-often present themselves. Kerkhoff invites staff to find supportive partners, be authentic, prioritize self-care, and cautions that there are “five ways to mess up a transition.” Reflection questions for individual and small group discussion amongst staff, parish leaders and pastors conclude each section of the book. This resource is intended to be used with Navigating Pastoral Transitions: A Parish Leader's Guide and Navigating Pastoral Transitions: A Priest’s Guide. This work is written for Catholics, though church staff from other traditions will find some content applicable for their contexts.
