Safe Sanctuaries

web resource
Accessed April 19, 2017.

Creating safe congregations for children, youth, and seniors is the goal of this United Methodist online resource that has links to articles, webinars, and contact information for denominational staff persons assigned to help churches create safe environments for vulnerable populations. The topics covered vary. Reporting abuse, defining elder abuse and how to respond to it, and using a sex offender list for background checks for staff and volunteers are a few examples. Additionally, two of the available webinars address the complexity of making retreats and church camps safe places. Free, downloadable training is also offered, covering topics such as traveling with youth and constructing or amending a congregation’s Safe Sanctuaries® policy. Some sections of the website pertain to United Methodists only; however, others can be used by a variety of religious traditions, if only as conversation starters for facing the challenges inherent in creating an environment that is safe for everyone.
