Six Characteristics of a Missional Church

article
by Ronald Carlson. National Ministries, American Baptist Churches, USA. Accessed April 14, 2017.

Former pastor and professor turned denominational leader for the missional church movement, Ronald Carlson, succinctly identifies the foundation of the missional church in this helpful article. The six characteristics explore what missional churches do, how they do it, and why. This includes emphasizing the Great Commission and the Great Commandment, understanding mission as more than writing a check to a worthy cause, and the desire to bring about “transformation of persons, systems (including the church), communities and culture.” Each characteristic is accompanied by several reflection questions, such as “What procedure does your faith community have for investigating the cultural characteristics of your community?” and “What resources do you have for equipping and deploying your people into the mission context?” This brief article is an appropriate conversation starter for Christian congregations who want to explore what it would mean for them to be “missional.”
