Unfortunately, a donor’s gift to a congregation can become a complicated burden. Some gifts become irrelevant to a congregation’s context; others eventually cost a congregation more than the gift itself. In this free and downloadable article, Attorney Kathryn Miree examines the components of effective gift acceptance policies to help congregations avoid these complications. Miree offers cautions, ideas, and suggestions for a gift acceptance policy; identifies elements of an effective gift acceptance policy; and discusses limits on gifts. Additionally, Miree addresses conflict of interest issues and notes a variety of gifts that congregations often receive, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of such gifts. Lastly, embedded in the article are three additional resources: a sample gift acceptance policy, a sample conflict of interest statement, and questions for owners or managers of real estate that is being gifted. Congregations of all traditions will find Miree’s work helpful and accessible.
