We Make the Road by Walking: A Year-Long Quest for Spiritual Formation, Reorientation, and Activation

book
by Brian D. McLaren. Jericho Books, 2015.

This devotional book takes you deep into spiritual soil. It is not a modest garden patch. The 52 readings are designed for a weekly encounter over a year. So, the growing season is longer than summer grain. For many congregations, it might be a prayer book for the entire community during a particular season. The book itself contains suggestions for use in Appendix II. Brian D. McLaren is an author, speaker, activist, and public theologian. A former college English teacher and pastor, he is an ecumenical global networker among innovative Christian leaders. If you are familiar with McLaren’s writings, you know you will get many questions, a respectful encounter with scripture, and winsome engagement with culture. Regarding questions, be prepared to think and pray about “Why are we here?” “What is a good life?” “What dangers should we guard against?” In terms of scripture, McLaren doesn’t just stick to gospel favorites. His scripture choices for contemplation are shaped by the liturgical year and he often reflects on those that those that challenge him (and us the readers). The prayerful consideration of culture is evident, for example, in the way the Genesis story is juxtaposed with what we are learning about creation from biologists and anthropologists. Read. Pray. Grow.
