Wired Churches, Wired Temples: Taking Congregations and Missions into Cyberspace

by Elena Larsen. Pew Internet & American Life Project, 2000.

The results of the first survey on the use of the Internet in congregations are examined in this report. The survey was conducted by email and the report is posted online. Over 1,300 congregations participated. Some of the reports findings include: 21 percent of Internet users have looked for religious or spiritual information online; more than 2 million American Internet users seek religious or spiritual material each day; 38 percent of online black women have gone to religious sites; and 83 percent of congregations with web sites felt that their site had helped congregational life some or a great deal. The report is an interesting look at the state of congregational Internet use at a time when such use is becoming more common. Now available as a downloadable report.
