Church Law Group attorney David Middlebrook conducts this interview with author and church consultant Jim Tomberlin. The twenty-three minute YouTube video focuses on questions about church mergers. While mergers are often viewed negatively, Tomberlin says that mergers can create healthier congregations. This is because a church’s mission and vision can become clearer during merger conversations. Tomberlin also addresses the relational and legal aspects of mergers. Tomberlin identifies and briefly explains the four types of mergers: “rebirth,” “adoption,” “marriage,” and “ICU.” He talks about the three stages in a merger conversation and the corresponding questions leaders should ask. This video gives users a preview of Tomberlin’s book, {{Better Together: Making Church Mergers Work | https://www.amazon.com/dp/1118131304/?tag=centerforcong-20}}, and often refers to it. Any pastor, leadership board member, or judicatory leader can use this video as an educational tool or conversation starter with its leaders.
