Here the United Methodist Church (UMC) offers an article designed to help congregations become more welcoming to their guests. The article includes forty elements of congregational life that need review to improve the welcome that guests receive. A few of the topics covered are as follows: website and social networks, record-keeping, a “friendliness audit,” signage-both in and outside of the facility, guest follow-up by clergy and laity, greeter/usher training, and printed materials, such as church brochures, guest packets, and worship bulletins. Each of the areas briefly states the purpose of the topic and offers tips for its successful implementation. For example, one suggestion is to have a “weekly hospitality time.” One tip reminds readers that more than sugary treats should be offered. Many traditions, Christian or otherwise, will find the forty items and corresponding tips user-friendly and helpful.
