With its roots in the 1960s, Glide Memorial UMC serves the poor and disenfranchised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Glide's 48 programs promote self-sufficiency and provide three free meals a day, AIDS testing, health care, women's programs, crisis intervention, basic services, literacy and computer training, job training and placement, and children, youth and family educational programs. In 1999 Glide opened the Community House, a nine-story residential, 52-unit housing complex adjacent to the church as a long term solution to problems of poverty and homelessness. Residential stay in Glide Community House is unlimited. Funding sources include government, corporate, foundation and individual grants.
