Communities of Salt and Light: Reflections on the Social Mission of the Parish

This website helps parishes “find resources about living as communities of salt and light.” The foundation of the site is the statement of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops published in 1994 and entitled "Communities of Salt and Light: Reflections on the Social Mission of the Parish”. On this site the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops provides a wide variety of resources for implementing the social teaching of the church within the life of the local parish. This classic collection of reflections begins with the parish as the fundamental building block of Catholic life, and emphasizes the role of lay people as “salt and light” in the world, caring for the poor, and advocating for justice through the formation of community and in solidarity with those who suffer. New resources are regularly compiled on this webpage to offer opportunities and inspiration on particular social issues for parishes seeking to live out the social teaching. Although a distinctively Catholic resource, other faith traditions will find some resources adaptable, such as “What Would You Do? An Activity for Youth Groups” which presents youth with different social justice scenarios and requires them to create responses to those challenges.
