Ethics and Spiritual Care: A Guide for Pastors and Spiritual Directors

by Joseph D. Driskill D, Karen Lebacqz. Abingdon Press, 2000.

This thoughtful overview of current thinking on clergy ethics and how these models apply to spiritual care makes clear the need for further exploration of the subject. The authors examine the possibility for "spiritual abuse" in spiritual direction and pastoral counseling, but also note how cultural and ecclesial circumstances affect perceptions of abuse. They would never deny the reality or possibility of abuse in a counseling relationship, but note that sexual abuse is not necessarily a good model for understanding spiritual abuse and that overprotection can affect the quality of the relationship.
