Navigating Pastoral Transitions: A Parish Leader's Guide

book
by Marti R. Jewell. Liturgical Press, 2013.

As one of three interrelated resources written for Roman Catholics who are “navigating pastoral transitions,” author and professor Marti Jewell offers this “guide for best practices and self care.” Jewell believes that leaders can contribute to the well-being of the parish and its members during this dynamic and sometimes confusing time, and her suggestions reflect that perspective. Ideas include the following: extensive communication, including using websites, Facebook and Twitter; ritualize both the exit and entrance of priests; and be prepared for a variety of emotional responses from parishioners and yourself. Reflection questions for individual and small group discussion amongst staff, parish leaders and pastors conclude each section of the book. This resource is intended to be used with Navigating Pastoral Transitions: A Staff Guide and Navigating Pastoral Transitions: A Priest’s Guide. This work is written for Roman Catholics, though church leaders from other traditions will find some of the suggestions applicable for their contexts.
