Now, Discover Your Strengths

by Marcus Buckingham, Donald O. Clifton. Free Press, 2001.

The authors claim that the most efficient personal growth comes through leveraging individual strengths rather than shoring up weaknesses. They provide an excellent platform for designing a program of intentional opportunities for accomplishment. The arguments are well supported by extensive research and the concepts are illustrated with case studies throughout. For example, the book features “a Strength Finder test” which allows people to understand why they are drawn to certain tasks and activities. The whole design of the book ties directly into Paul’s discussion of spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12 making it a natural companion for a study of spiritual gifts. Like Paul, the authors encourage us to see others as they are and celebrate and strengthen their gifts, rather than focusing on what they are not. An enjoyable read, this resource used in connection with an exploration of spiritual gifts has the potential to produce a substantial contribution to the ministry of the congregation and its individual members.
