Preservation of historic congregational structures can be an overwhelming task. There are a large number of things to consider, including energy efficiency, repair, and maintenance, among others. The National Park Service provides help on a number of these issues in their “Preservation Briefs” publications. There are 47 briefs on various specific issues related to historic building preservation available for free on this site. The documents are very specific in the subject matter that they cover. For example, there are briefs specifically about roofing, flat plaster walls and ceilings, stucco, removing graffiti, wooden windows, painting and many more. Congregations in historic buildings will benefit from the knowledge and recommendations of experts distilled in these briefs. These should be considered essential reading when embarking on any changes to a historic facility.
