The Alban Personnel Handbook for Congregations

by Erwin Berry. The Alban Institute, 1999.

'The Alban Personnel Handbook' is designed to give church leaders, both lay and pastoral, the necessary tools and information for implementing a comprehensive personnel system, managing human resources effectively, and applying policies and processes in a fair and equitable manner. The material is divided into two main parts: the text and the appendices. The text examines different elements of the personnel system: church organization, job structure, employee searches, training, staff goals, evaluation, compensation, morale, and management. Included in each chapter is a discussion of the theological and ethical foundations for each policy, written from a pastoral perspective. The appendices reproduce twenty-five different policies, procedures, and forms referred to in the text. These materials are also provided on CD-ROM in both .RDF and .PDF formats. All of the personnel system components are readily adaptable to the unique circumstances of local congregations. Pastors, church officers, board members, business managers, and personnel committees will find 'The Alban Personnel Handbook' invaluable in developing and maintaining a positive work environment in the local church.
