Winner of the 2006 Logos Book Award, Sacred Rhythms is a thoughtful and practical book that introduces the reader to seven key Christian spiritual practices like honoring the body, self-examination and discernment. It then invites the reader to put them into practice. Respected author and founder of The Transforming Center, Ruth Haley Barton proposes that spiritual disciplines are a way to become more open to God’s gracious love and be transformed by it. Each chapter includes exercises to help the reader begin the practices, both individually and in a group context. The final chapter puts the pieces together by helping readers arrange their lives for spiritual transformation through developing a “rule of life,” a term from the monastic tradition that describes sacred rhythms that help us live a sustainable life of faith. This is an excellent spirituality resource for individuals and small groups from evangelical, independent and many mainline traditions.
