How do congregations and individuals go about the process of making important decisions informed by the spirit of Christ? This leader’s guide provides a congregational leader with the tools needed to lead small group studies of the Way of Discernment, Participant Guide, which is a part of the popular and successful Upper Room series titled, Companions in Christ. The series is based on the ancient spiritual discipline of discernment. Following a preparatory meeting the study group engages in sessions which include: The Beckoning of Discernment, The Heart of Discernment, Fruit as Touchstones, Core Identity as Touchstone, Growing in the Gift, In Hard Places, Communal Discernment: Beginnings, Communal Discernment: Going Farther, Elements of Perpetual Challenge, and The All Encompassing Audience. The process can work well for any group in the church but might be especially helpful to use for board development and leadership studies. Congregations seeking direction in mission discovery and vision casting might also find it helpful. The study is comprehensive and can be used in most Christian congregations.
