When the Word Leads Your Pastoral Search: Biblical Principles and Practices to Guide Your Search

by Chris Brauns. Moody Publishers, 2010.

Author and senior pastor Chris Brauns’ goal is to help search committees find and call senior, associate, and youth pastors who make “good marriages” with their congregations. First, says Brauns, search committees should turn to scripture (Moses and Acts 17, specifically), pray, and remember the work of the Holy Spirit during the search process. Brauns then addresses practical matters, such as evaluating preaching and conducting interviews. The lengthy section on preaching discusses construction of expository sermons, suggests evaluative criteria for assessing content and presentation, and offers a worksheet for grading a candidate’s preaching. The interview section provides both interview hints and specific questions. Two lists conclude the book: frequently asked questions and additional resources. The resources cover topics such as creating financial packages and preparing the congregation for new clergy leadership. Evangelical Christian search committee members are the most suitable audience for this helpful and accessible book.
