“Young adult ministry is not an outreach or a campaign…. (It) must change the way the church does business.” With this conviction, Catholic women religious in Cleveland are taking the lead in an experiment in young adult ministry called Coalition with Young Adults (C-YA). The Coalition is a network of church-related stakeholders and young adults engaging in ministry experiments that take seriously the transitory nature of young adulthood. The outcomes thus far have been as multi-faceted as young adulthood itself. They include an experiment in lay community living, a Newman Center spiritual direction initiative, an intergenerational convocation for young adults and women religious, and a leadership development program featuring retreats and mentorship. This brief but substantial article (see pages 35-38 of the journal) provides rationale and models for imaginative and fruitful engagement with and by young adults today. It is aimed at a Catholic audience but useful for anyone interested in “outside the box” ministry ideas.
