It’s not often that you read a book about church culture and leadership that is both spiritual and practical; one that provides useful tools and teaches leaders how to be spiritual leaders. In Becoming a Blessed Church, author Graham Standish does both. As a counselor, spiritual director and pastor, Standish uses his own church’s story of becoming a blessed church as an example of what happens when congregations seek together God’s purpose, presence and power. The focus of this book is not about numerical growth but deepening the spirituality of the church, especially its leaders, through learning important spiritual practices. As a bonus, the appendix includes fourteen practical processes, many related to discernment, which will prove useful for congregations desiring to ground all their ministries-whether a budgeting process or a committee meeting-in prayer and the presence of God. Pastors and lay leaders from mainline Protestant and Evangelical churches would find resonance and help within the pages of this book.
