Becoming a Church of Lifelong Learners

by John Roberto. Twenty-Third Publications, 2006.

The Catholic Church is leaving behind old models of faith formation and embracing new forms more relevant to the needs of today. This approach uses as a focus the major yearly events of the parish and designs faith formation around them for perpetual lifelong learning. The system is grounded in four practices: regular engagement of the whole parish around events, adding intergenerational activities, encouraging home-based practices, and creating leadership teams that collaborate and innovate. This author bases it all upon solid research and his experience with parishes experimenting with and implementing such approaches. Numerous practical suggestions and works-cited sources are infused throughout the chapters. Although written for Catholic parishes and leaders, many of the activities and concepts can be adapted by other denominations. Included with the book is a CD-ROM of essays from religious educators and PowerPoint presentations of each chapter.
