Named an Amazon Editors’ Favorite Book of the Year for 2013, this highly readable and no-nonsense guide to congregational fundraising can be very helpful to congregation leaders, finance committees and church administrators. The authors identify stewardship as “a journey grounded in gratitude, revealed in prayer, and lived in faith”. The ten chapter proposals include admonitions to ground congregational stewardship practice in prayer, eliminate secrecy surrounding money, train leadership, encourage tithing, and be on guard for frequent pitfalls. The style is to highlight discernment rather than number crunching. This is followed by the book’s central strategy: thank, ask, repeat, or develop a style of opportunities for encouraging generosity. Growing out of this strategy are the important practices of providing witness opportunities for givers and recipients, and creating a positive spiritual climate to let generosity soar. An added bonus: each chapter concludes with a helpful “to do” list.
