Community is Messy: The Perils and Promise of Small Group Ministry

by Heather Zempel. InterVarsity Press, 2012.

Heather Zempel is the leader of discipleship at National Community Church in Washington, DC. She also holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biological engineering from Louisiana State University. Community is Messy draws on the eclectic combination of her educational background and her ministry experience, in order to show how small group ministry is inherently difficult and yet full of possibility. She argues that groups are messy precisely because they involve people. Nevertheless, these messy communities are exactly the right places for growing spiritually and developing maturity. This work will help new leaders be prepared for what happens as authentic community develops and provide insights for veteran leaders struggling with the chaos of community.
