Determining the need for outside professional help can sometimes be confusing for pastoral leaders. Knowing who to call, what questions to ask and what qualities and expertise to look for are important considerations when bringing in external help. Susan Weber, an experienced consultant and staff member at the Indianapolis Center for Congregations, wrote this article, Facilitators, Consultants and Coaches, based on interviews with clergy who had worked with outside resource persons. Facilitators, Consultants and Coaches answers many of the questions pastoral leaders have about the three roles. Additionally, it provides clear distinctions among the roles in terms of what they do, how they do it and what essential qualities of a facilitator, consultant or coach are most important.
