Sentness: Six Postures of Missional Christians

by Kim Hammond, Darren Cronshaw. InterVarsity Press, 2014.

“A big issue facing the church today is that we have bought deeply into consumer church. A great opportunity is to shift from selling to sending.” The authors’ six postures provide a framework of paradigms and skills to facilitate this shift. The authors, both seasoned practitioners and teachers, explain how the spirit of consumerism permeates church culture. They share stories of faith communities that are going against that grain, while also unpacking the six postures. For example, one posture advocates embracing a “submerged ministry” by moving out among places and people. Another commends fostering “safe spaces” where people on different journeys can find faith and community. The conclusion challenges readers to dream about what their “sentness” might look like. Appendices include a recommended reading list. While aimed at potential new church starters, existing congregations wishing to move beyond consumer Christianity can use this resource to spark transformation.
