Small Group Leaders' Handbook: Developing Transformational Communities

by J. Alex Kirk. InterVarsity Press, 2009.

The authors of Small Group Leaders’ Handbooks, all of whom are in the same small group of current and former campus ministry professionals, argue that small groups are all about transformation. Writing from their experiences, these authors maintain that small groups must be a place of real, life-giving relationship, as opposed to meeting places for casual acquaintances. Further, they state that it is vital that small group communities study scripture, pray and participate in God’s mission together. This work has chapters on the elements of small groups including creation, group dynamics, prayer and worship, pastoral care, evangelism, mission and reproducing leaders. While their backgrounds are diverse and steeped in campus ministry, their model presents possibility for a number of contexts. This is a helpful resource for anyone seeking an overview of small groups based in authentic community.
