Sustainable Youth Ministry: Why Most Youth Ministry Doesn't Last and What Your Church Can Do About It

by Mark DeVries. InterVarsity Press, 2008.
Large sustainable youth ministry

Mark DeVries, founder of Youth Ministry Architects, gives congregations struggling with youth ministry new hope and careful direction. He begins with a statement of the problem often found in youth ministry - how to find the right youth minister to do the ministry. This is followed by a simple question for conversation: “how do you know if you’re stuck?” If positive answers to this question can be identified by a pastor or ministry team, it may be time to dig deeper. DeVries argues that for youth ministry to be sustained and thrive, congregations need to develop a systems approach. This means team building, training, financial investment, changing the congregational culture regarding youth ministry, the development of youth ministry search teams, finding emotionally healthy youth workers, and sustaining these leaders with ongoing support. Three appendices are included: discussion questions, a builders list, and a compliance checklist. This would be a helpful book for a congregational leadership team to read together before hiring a youth minister.
