The Power of Asset Mapping: How Your Congregation Can Act on Its Gifts

by Luther Snow. The Alban Institute, 2004.

For congregations who wish to take a deeper look at what they really have at their disposal for mission and ministry, this readily accessible and helpful workbook is a powerful ally. Its purpose is to help congregations discover their assets and help leaders prepare for the discovery. The book is divided into three sections. The first gets the process started by leading an individual on a personal assessment of his or her assets: physical, talents and skills, associations, institutions, and economic. This list is then widened to include hidden assets that may be residing in one’s personal needs and the needs of others. The second section deals with how to discover the assets within and available to a congregation. A practical exercise is suggested which includes recognizing assets, connecting the dots, and identifying those to engage. The third section presents the theoretical basis for the process of asset mapping and how it reinforces the positive foundations of congregational life. It also includes a description of asset mapping in action.
