“To engage more effectively in mission and ministry, congregational leaders need to teach listening skills and nurture an environment that affirms listening” (p. 157). Based on a review of research and interviews with 63 ministers and lay leaders, Baab addresses listening in the congregation and wider community, listening for mission, listening in decision making, and listening to God together. Listening skills and strategies are highlighted, all assuming the listener has “a baseline commitment to stop talking” (p. 109). Congregational groups studying the book will appreciate the “Questions for Reflection, Journaling, and Group Discussion” at the end of each chapter. Baab, a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) minister, has authored numerous books on congregational life and Christian spiritual practices.
