Leadership Network, an organization committed to helping ministry professionals learn from each other, is dedicated to moving churches from ideas to implementation to impact. A section of their website titled “Hispanic/Latino Connections through Leadership Network” features more than a dozen blogs on church-related issues associated with this ethnic group. Most of these pieces are written by Dr. Warren Bird, Director of Research at Leadership Network, an ordained minister in the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. Many of the blogs address implications of language and culture on church growth stating that seven percent of first-generation U.S. Hispanics adopt English as their dominant language, forty-four percent of second generation U.S. Hispanics predominantly speak English, but eighty percent of third-generation U.S. Hispanics speak English as their first language. Thus, preconceived notions about the importance of Spanish as a requirement for education classes and worship services may actually be a roadblock for reaching the latter group.
